Evaluation Of Elderly Questions

1) Since most of the elderly can't speak English but mostly Chinese, Hokkien and Cantonese, how can we communicate with them?

Now, people would mostly speak the common language, English. Our ancestors came from different countries and travelled to Singapore, seeking for a better life. Since then, they have grown old. We were born in Singapore, learned English in school. So when we speak to our grandparents, we don't know their what they are saying as we don't understand the language they are speaking.

2) How can we solve the problem for the elderly being a 'nuisance' ?

When the elderly go out of their house, they walk very slow. These elderly are blocking the way for those people in a rush to go somewhere.

3) What forms of technology can the elderly own to catch up with the generation?

What kind of the latest technology can the elderly own. The youngsters these days are catching up with the generation of technology while the elderly are in their houses sleeping and not reading up on the newest form of technology which they can communicate. So how can the elderly be more active and buy these technology to catch up with the newer generation?

CAI Report On The Aging Population

Housing. A place where it is elderly friendly. Elderly will be able to live as part of the community.
Accessibility. The building will have accessible lifts and walkways, they will also have transport right at their doorstep.
Caring. We need to ensure that the elderly health is in good condition by doing checkups regularly.
Opportunities. The elderly will be given opportunities to participate in activities. Their relationship with their family will increase.

They will build accessible lifts and a transport system right at their doorstep.

Trained FP's will provide necessary care for patients within their home.
The government will partner the private and people sector to ensure sibsidised service are relevant.

We could go to these houses/centres and have a nice chat with them to build up friendly relationships with them.
We could help them organize activities for the elderly.
We can contribute our knowledge and try to help the government come out with a solution to help these elderly with their funding.

The Elderly Challenge

Although I didn't interview or go outdoors to observe some elderly, I did visit my own grandparents in Malaysia.

Observation 1 - When my grandmother was trying to pour a kettle containing hot water, her hands were shivering. When the elderly get on with age, their muscles and bones weaken thus having less strength.

Observation 2 - Nearing bedtime, my grandpa would always grip the railing with two hands while walking up. Since our grandparents muscles and bones have weakened, their walking stability would have decreased. They would need support from other objects.

Observation 3 - My grandfather would usually need spectacles when reading the newspaper or he would squint his eyes when watching television. Their vision becomes very poor when they get older.
